Micro-CT for Geology Research
BRUKER SKYSCAN X-ray computed tomographs are an essential tool for exploring the fine microstructure of geological samples nondestructively. Capture images from larger samples suitable for in situ testing or scale down with the SkyScan 2214 Nano-CT for submicron resolution to
- Distinguish different phases with high contrast
- Identify faults and defects for oil and gas exploration research
- 3D nondestructive testing in situ testing with materials testing stages
- Quantitative analysis for porosity, pore size distribution, and grain size

Nondestructive imaging of sandstone
The SkyScan tomographs provide excellent contrast, allowing different mineral phases to be identified and quantified.

Grain size analysis
The latest CT ANALYZER (CTAN) quantitative software program can segment and calculate grain size and grain size distribution. All of these parameters can be calculated and visualized with Bruker micro-CT’s inhouse-developed software tools.

Sediment analysis
The SkyScan visualization programs DATAVIEWER and CTVOX create beautifully rendered images and movies of samples, allow for complete data manipulation, and side-by-side comparison in 3D space.

Mechanical testing in-situ
Using in-situ compression, tensile and temperature stages, mechanical experiments can be performed inside the scanner. This way, the correlation between a sample’s structure and mechanical properties can be investigated in high detail simultaneously. Bruker micro-CT offers mechanical testing stages up to 4.4 kN and in-situ temperature control from -40 °C below ambient up to +85 °C.
