X4 in Focus: More Scanning, Less Handling

How the X4 POSEIDON micro-CT sample carousel supports unattended, higher-throughput micro-CT imaging

Figure 1: The X4 POSEIDON equipped with the 15-position sample changer.

In micro-CT, productivity is determined by more than the length of an individual scan. Time is lost when an instrument sits idle between samples, when an operator must return repeatedly to load the next specimen, or when several users are competing for access.

The optional X4 POSEIDON sample carousel allows multiple samples to be prepared and queued in advance, reducing manual exchanges and supporting continuous or unattended scanning.

What is the X4 POSEIDON sample carousel?

The carousel is an optional 15-position automated sample changer mounted at the front of the X4 POSEIDON. Once samples are loaded and scans are scheduled, the system can move from one sample to the next with less operator involvement.

This makes it possible to prepare a series of scans in advance and continue imaging during periods when an operator may not be available to change samples manually.

Does the carousel make an individual scan faster?

The carousel does not directly shorten the acquisition time for a particular sample. Its primary benefit is reducing the idle time between scans.

Without automated sample changing, the system may finish a scan and remain unused until someone is available to remove the sample and load the next one. By keeping additional samples ready, the carousel helps the X4 move more efficiently from one scan to another.

How many samples can it accommodate?

The carousel provides 15 sample positions. Each position can accommodate a sample up to 50 mm in diameter and 80 mm in height.

Smaller samples may also be stacked vertically or bundled, potentially allowing more than one specimen to be placed in a position when the application and sample preparation permits.

Figure 3: Samples loaded.

Can samples be added while the X4 is operating?

Yes. An LED indicates the status of each position, and samples can be added or replaced while the system is operating without interrupting the scan currently in progress.

This can be especially helpful in a shared laboratory. Users do not necessarily have to wait for an entire sequence to finish before preparing another sample for the queue.

How does the system manage the scanning sequence?

The sample changer uses an intelligent loading algorithm designed to optimize throughput. The system provides automatic sample shuffling to improve efficiency.

Rather than treating the carousel as a passive rack of samples, the X4 incorporates it into the imaging workflow so that instrument time can be used more effectively.

What types of laboratories benefit most?

The carousel can be valuable wherever samples are scanned repeatedly or in batches, including:

  • Shared micro-CT and imaging facilities serving multiple users
  • Research laboratories conducting comparative sample studies
  • Service laboratories processing samples for multiple projects
  • Industrial and quality-control environments with routine scanning needs
  • Studies involving multiple specimens, treatment groups, materials, or time points

The benefit becomes more significant as sample volume increases. Even when individual scans are relatively short, repeatedly stopping to exchange specimens can consume substantial staff time and leave gaps in instrument use.

Does automated loading eliminate the need for careful sample preparation?

No. Automation does not replace thoughtful experimental design or consistent sample preparation.

Samples must still be mounted securely, positioned appropriately, and associated with suitable acquisition settings. In comparative studies, consistency in mounting and scan parameters remains essential. The carousel automates movement between samples; it does not eliminate the need to establish a sound imaging method.

Preparing samples carefully before they enter the queue is therefore an important part of achieving both reliable results and efficient operation.

What happens when a larger sample or specialty stage is needed?

The sample changer can remain installed even when it is not being used. The operator retains full access to the X4 for loading larger samples or working with specialty stages.

This allows a laboratory to use automated batch scanning when appropriate without giving up the flexibility required for larger specimens or more specialized experiments.
