Computed tomography: Applications for evaluating tablets and capsules
ABSTRACT
This overview demonstrates the effectiveness of the use of micro-CT for the characterization of the contents and coatings of pharmaceutical tablets and capsules. “CT capabilities comprise volumetric analysis of individual materials; analysis of particle size, shape, and volume; analysis of API distribution; and assessment of coating thickness and uniformity.” This information is key to protecting intellectual property (IP), verifying quality, product development, and testing performance. Examples shown include in-motion imaging.

Classification and Visualization of Physical and Chemical Properties of Falsified Medicines with Handheld Raman Spectroscopy and X-Ray Computed Tomography
ABSTRACT
Public health and patient safety rely on accurate measurements for quality of drugs, including the detection of substandard and falsified pharmaceutical products. In this article, researchers investigated the usefulness of two analytical methods, handheld Raman spectroscopy and micro-CT, for detecting falsified pharmaceuticals among oral solid antihypertensive pharmaceutical products containing candesartan cilexetil as an active pharmaceutical ingredient. “[They] present a decision tree for investigating the authenticity of samples purporting to be authentic commercial tablets. [Their] results indicate that the combination approach of visual observation, handheld Raman and X-ray CT is a powerful strategy for nondestructive discrimination of suspect samples.”

Deformulation of a solid pharmaceutical form using computedtomography and X-ray fluorescence
ABSTRACT
Deformulation of pharmaceuticals can be utilized to analyze “the chemical composition of the excipients integrating a pharmaceutical formulation of a specific medicine and as an important tool to conduct morphometric studies of the formulation under study”. This analytical approach helps researchers quantify the components of reference drugs or identify potential counterfeit pharmaceuticals. By using micro-CT images, it was possible to make a detailed physical analysis of a pharmaceutical tablet, including dynamic studies of the drug release process. “All the morphological characteristics of the tablets were studied using three-dimensional tomographic images.”
