DEXA for Bone Mineral Density Research

DEXA scanning has become the most common method for measuring bone mineral density (BMD) of small animals in metabolic bone disease research. Laboratory rats and mice are frequently used as animal models in osteoporosis research and other bone related studies.

  • Osteoporosis research utilizing rats and mice includes hormonal interventions (ovariectomy, orchidectomy, hypophysectomy, parathyroidectomy), immobilization, and dietary manipulations.
  • Rat and mouse skeletons are studied extensively by DEXA because of the similarities in physiopathologic responses between human and rat/mouse skeletons.

Measurement

The InAlyzer displays a live image of the interior of the unit so you can monitor your study animal while the high and low energy images are acquired.

Results

The software has windows for displaying bone, lean, and fat or a composition of them all. Results for the total animal are calculated and displayed on the left.

DEXA ROI function

Data from the Region of Interest (ROI)

Multiple regions of interest can be drawn for analysis of different areas of the animal, such as each hindlimb or the spine. Multiple excised samples could also be scanned at once and ROIs used for analysis of each specimen.

DEXA bone multiple measurement

Multiple bone measurements

The DEXA InAlyzer2 is a fan-beam device using super flattening technique and can be used to measure several animals at the same time or by analyzing results using ROI on each animal.
